A Little More Room

November had settled into the woods, leaving copper leaves underfoot and a chill in the afternoon air. Fox, Rabbit, Badger, and Owl were planning a Friendsgiving, each with something to bring: a cake, a garland, a little music, and a welcoming table. There was plenty to do before the day arrived, and help was closer than any of them knew.

A Little Help with Dessert

Fox had an apple cake to bake and a basket to fill. Beneath the branches, Mouse had found an apple nearly as big as himself—and was quite determined to help. Before long, they were sharing a mixing bowl, a dusting of flour, and the lovely smell of something worth bringing to a celebration.

A Little Something Special

Rabbit was gathering leaves for a garland, with her little sibling searching beside her. There were plenty of pretty ones, but then two small paws lifted a leaf too magnificent to leave behind. Rabbit knew just where it belonged: right in the middle, where everyone could admire it.

A Little Music, a New Friend

Badger was practicing outside his cottage when a familiar tune caught a neighbor’s ear. Out peeked Mole, holding a concertina and wearing a hopeful little smile. Badger pulled another stool closer. Their first few notes soon became a tune neither could quite keep their feet still for.

A Little Wobble

Owl had spread the tablecloth when Squirrel arrived with a stack of neatly folded napkins. Everything was coming together, except for one stubborn stool. A flat stone and two helpful paws soon put that right. When Owl invited Squirrel to stay, there was just one more thing to fetch: another seat.

A Little More Room

One by one, the friends arrived—and every one had brought someone along. Four places would never do. A chair appeared, a crate was nudged into place, and a sturdy plank made the table longer. Soon the great golden leaf hung overhead, the cake stood among the dishes, and eight friends settled in together. Somehow, the little celebration had grown into just the right size.
